Area Contest Can Be A Showcase for Guests
by Diana Kovac, District Governor
Please send me a list of the winners of your contests who will be representing your club and any guests who will be attending the area contest. It will be held at Bayer on Shawnee Mission Parkway on 9/30. There is a security guard at the entrance of the facility who will require a list of attendees prior to the contest.

Feel free to invite guests to the area contest, too. If you have a potential new member you think would benefit from seeing the level of improvement possible from Toastmasters, bring them to this event. I am sure those competing will be happy to talk with guests about how they went from a new member to competing in the area contest.

Congratulations!

You all heard last month about Division 22’s induction in to the Hall of Fame. It is only through the hard work and dedication of our members that District 22 continues to be successful.
Is Your Bag Packed? (Part 1 of 2)
by Mike Tuttle, Lt. Governor Education and Training
This month we will revisit August’s theme of B.A.G. or Bring A Guest. While the theme is still active, and the district and your club need you to continue to act on it, this month B.A.G. stands for something a little different—Become A Gold!

That is, an Advanced Communicator—Gold. With this accomplishment and the old Advanced Leader or new Advanced Leader—Silver, you automatically reach the summit of Toastmaster recognition, DTM. Now while I’ve heard it said that DTM stands for Don’t Time Me, we all know it stands for Distinguished Toastmaster.

I called DTM the summit because I view the journey to DTM as a climb up a challenging mountain, but a challenge that can be and is met. Each year that I have been associated with Toastmasters, District 22 has produced at least one new DTM. An accomplishment to take pride in and talk about the fact that I view the process of becoming a DTM as a mountain climb reflects the title of this article. If your bag, or backpack, isn’t packed and packed correctly, you can’t make the climb with success.

The bag of course is the basic speech manual. Having it packed correctly is not only completing the ten speeches in the manual, but also being comfortable with each of the ten techniques it teaches and being able to weave several of them into each speech you give as you move through the advanced manuals on your way to Advanced Communicator—Gold.

Next month I will tell you why having your bag packed is important and how it relates to new members.

B.A.G. in Action
by Tara Patty, Bulletin Editor
Our enthusiasm for Bring A Guest meetings continues to grow as we hear stories from across the district. Division A’s Gene Becker is really making B.A.G a reality in Wichita. All division members are invited to a potluck picnic and meeting on September 21. Each member is bringing family members, friends and potential new members to share in the festivities. Attendees are also bringing a bag with a secret object in it to the meeting. We can only guess what these are for. What a fun take on the theme! Continue to share you B.A.G. stories with us!

Deadline for Smedley Award Quickly Approaching

September 30 is the deadline for the Smedley Award. When your club adds five new members between August 1 and September 30 you will receive a special Smedley Award ribbon for your banner and an education module. No need to apply for this honor. Toastmasters International keeps track of it for you. Just be sure that the join dates on the applications reflect the dates included in the contest and that they are received no latter than September 30.

I know of two clubs that are just one member away. Good luck!

Distinguished Club Program. Distinguished by December.

How are you doing with your personal goals? At the end of September, one fourth of our Toastmaster year will be gone. Are you on track? How about your club? In reviewing the TI website reports, I see several clubs with DCP points. Will your club be Distinguished by December?
