Happy 2007 New Years Resolutions
by Diana Kovac, District Governor
I hope you all had a wonderful New Year and that 2007 is off to a great start!

A New Year brings thoughts of new beginnings and inspires us to look ahead and make New Year’s Resolutions to achieve specific goals for self- improvement.

How many of us have made, broke, forgot, gave up, or even ‘Achieved’ our past New Year’s Resolutions? I recently heard of a person who wanted to finally succeed at his exercise resolution so this year he set his goal to simply drive by an exercise gym at least once a week.

New Years is a great time to look ahead and plan your Toastmasters resolutions/goals. They may not be as simple as driving by a fitness center, but here are a few tips to help you succeed.

  1. Work with your club VP of Education to find out exactly what you need to do to reach your next Toastmasters educational level. In communications is it a CC, AC, CL, AL or DTM!! In Leadership, is it a Club officer, Area Governor, Division Governor, or as an assistant? (Please contact me if you have any questions at djkovac@everestkc.net .
  2. Set a date to accomplish your goals, preferably the sooner the better and especially before June which marks the end of the 2006/2007 Toastmasters year.
  3. Write your goals down and do something daily toward reaching them. Because you have the help and support of your club, Area, Division and District, you are not alone in working to achieve your goals. We all help each other succeed!!
  4. New Year – New Member! Invite a friend or relative to a Toastmasters meting and share this excellent communication and leadership-building program.
  5. CELEBRATE your success when you’ve reached your next Toastmasters Goal!

Don’t just drive by your communication and leadership gym.
Make your Toastmasters resolution, work toward achieving it every day and you’ll succeed in having a Happy Toastmasters 2007 New Year!

One might ask, does required training for Toastmasters ever end? The answer might be comparable to a great athlete or to a top flight business team, both are at the top of their game, but ask either how they stay there and always deliver their best and the answer will be they train continually.

Just a week ago your top 3 officers completed mid year (read that winter) training in Rockford Illinois, a very pretty site all in all, but a little difficult to get to. The point here is that Toastmasters asks no more of a club officer regarding training than it does a District Governor, to remain at the top of their game.

This year training usually held in Liberty will be Monday January 22 but at a brand new location, Butler Manufacturing Company 1540 Genessee St. Kansas City, MO 64102. Check with your VP ED for the exact start time.

Training for Overland Park will be at Black and Veatch 11401 Lamar, Overland Park, Kansas for the last time at that location due to heightened security (we are taking suggestions for a new, hopefully free location) on Saturday January 27 with registration starting at 8:30. There are great afternoon sessions at the Overland Park training including one on Parliamentary Procedure, to ensure your meetings go smoothly. There will also be a DEC meeting after lunch as well as judges training-- any contest must have trained judges. With the exception of the DEC meeting, which is for AG's/DG's only, all sessions are open to everyone.

Hope to see all 7 officers from each club at the training that best fits you. Also, we hope to see all those thinking of becoming officers or interested in leadership as well. The cost is $15.00 for the entire club if paid in advance (contact Kim Myers kmyers9@kc.rr.com ) or $3.00 per person at the door.

Darren LaCroix Connects with the Audience
by Martha Hoffman, District Public Relations Officer   Darren Jan 07
When Darren LaCroix rose to be one of the best in his field, others wanted to follow. How did the 2001 World Champion of Public Speaking do it?

Several of us joined Darren the second Tuesday of 2007 to see him coach participants on their speeches. His ideas and perceptions are his product; he delivers them on a sliding scale, unvarnished to high gloss. Darren encourages speakers to connect with the audience. Find out what is in it for them, Darren says.

His best advice is his business tagline, Stage Time, Stage Time, Stage Time.
