Happy New Year!

Toastby Mike Tuttle

District 22 Governor

I just wanted to take a quick moment to wish each one of you a happy new year. Of course if there is a new year there must be an old one. As the current calendar year comes to a close, the Toastmaster year will be half over.

Is the TM year really half over or is there still a half year left? As Toastmasters, I truly believe that we always view the glass as half full when presented with this age old question. Since that means that there is still a half year left, then it is not yet too late to accomplish our goals.

Our goals as Toastmasters, our goals as club members, our goals as clubs that belong to an Area, Division and District. These goals maybe as simple as finally doing that Ice Breaker (come on in the water is f-f-f-fine this time of year). They may be a little more challenging, such as reaching a new education level or stretching ourselves and completing a leadership requirement.

As a possible leadership function, our goal might be to display the consummate act of bravery and invite a friend or family member to visit and then join a club, or maybe even taking the really big step of bringing an old friend back to the club they have been absent from and getting them to renew their membership, and as the new year dawns renew their commitment to improve themselves through the Toastmaster process.

Whatever your goal is, as the new year begins, I would challenge you to embrace the half Toastmaster year that still remains and boldly work to make it happen and rejoice in your accomplishment when the time comes in June to review all you gotten done. Once again Happy New Year!

Why Attend Winter Training? ideas

By Faron Barr, Division T Governor

Have you marked your calendar for Toastmasters Winter Training?  We call it Toastmasters Leadership Institute or TLI.  It is a time for networking with other club officers.  Share your challenges and successes.  Get and give ideas.  Where else can you find people interested in hearing you talk at length about your role as an officer?

If you are a club leader, you are charged with helping your club become the best it can be. As an officer, part of your role is to be trained every six months for your position. Your training experience gives you ideas not only from the trainer but from other club officers as well. If you have been in office for six months, this will be is a different experience for you than the Spring Training since you know more than you did before.

Another reason training is important is that your club can earn credit toward your club's Distinguished Club Plan.  You are using the DCP program for the success of your club, aren't you?  If not, you need to come to training to learn about it and why it is so important.

If that's not enough reasons, each of the five TLI events will offer at least one advanced session.  All will offer Judges training, so you will have qualified judges in your club for speech contests.  Topeka TLI offers a motivational speech by Past District Governor, Jennifer Johnson. At most Saturday events, you will also have a choice of two training sessions offered in the afternoon that are designed to give you better insight on completing some of the various Toastmaster projects - the How to Present a Successful Club Module with Style and the High Performance Leadership Program.

Your club and your District leadership are counting on you to fulfill your obligation and responsibility by attending TLI for at least the officers training session.  However, if you make the effort to attend the training session, you might as well go the whole 9 yards and stay for some of the other sessions provided.

District officers and governors will be there along with other members from around our District. This is your chance to learn from some of the prominent Toastmasters in our District. Your club is counting on you to be the best that you can be at your position and this is your chance to learn how to SHINE as a representative of your club.

For dates, places and agendas, click on Event Calendar at www.toastmasters22.org .

We look forward to seeing you there.

More Goal Getters!

By Cyndra Melville, DTM, Lieutenant Governor Education and Training

Star (Beige)

DST@DST and AgMasters have joined the elite group of clubs to receive the Goal Getter Award at TLI next month.

To earn this prestigious award, Clubs must earn and have recorded by Toastmasters International five Distinguished Club Program (DCP) points by December 31, 2007.  Many clubs already have four Distinguished Club Points.  Just one more and they could do it too!!  Double check all education accomplishments and be sure that they have been turned in to Toastmasters International (TI).  Also, be sure that all new membership applications have been turned in.

Persons earning educational awards to help their club to this achievement will receive Goal Getter Buttons.

Clubs which have earned the Award to date:  Boeing Achievers (A1), Semi-Pro (A3), Cerners Innovative Toastmasters (L4), DST@DST (L6), and AgMasters (S1).

This is a mid-year recognition for clubs who have set their goals with the DCP program and have met half of them by mid-year, a terrific accomplishment.  The clubs will receive a special District 22 white and gold ribbon for their banner.  It is really beautiful and can be displayed with pride.

If you miss this recognition, there is another one ending June 30, 2008.  This will be a banner ribbon from TI signifying Distinguished for 5 points, Select Distinguished for 7 points and President's Distinguished for 9 points.

It has been proven statistically that clubs earning these awards are stronger clubs than those who don't.  When clubs receive training for their officers; gain new members; and have members earning educational awards, they are filling the needs of their members.

For more information on the Goal Getter Award, see our District web-site at www.toastmasters22.org .

It's Tool Time!

By Pamela Turner, DTM, Masters Club 8825

Most jobs are easier with the right tool. That's true for the tasks we do in Toastmasters. Some tools are built into the program. For instance, as an Evaluator, you use the Speech Evaluation form in the speech manual as your tool for giving an effective evaluation. Have you ever wondered (or wished) there were tools for some of the other Toastmasters tasks? There may be more tools available than you realize.

Look on the D22 website (www.toastmasters22.org). Select the Tips/Tools page.

§           As a Toastmaster, have you ever wished for a tool that would let you see at a glance what requirements there are for each educational award? Try the Education Award tool link under the White Ribbon tools.

§           Does the role of Evaluator make you want to run for the hills? Perhaps the Evaluation Techniques tool will help you approach that role with more confidence.

§           As a club President, have you wondered how you can tell if your club is as effective as possible? Have a look at the Club Effectiveness Worksheet.

§           As a new Toastmaster, would it help to have a summary of the various meeting roles? Look at the Meeting Roles Description matrix.

§           As a club VP of Public Relations, have you ever wished there was an easy way to get more club members involved in promoting your club? Try the PR Soft Tap Technique link under the Red Ribbon tools.

§           As a club officer, do you wonder how well you are doing? Evaluate yourself with the relevant Officer Self Assess tool.

§           When you serve as Grammarian, have you wished for a way to organize your observations? Try the Grammarian/Ah Counter Tracking Matrix.

These are just a few of the tools that you can find on the Tips/Tools page of the D22 website. Take a few minutes to browse. You may find the tool of your dreams.

What's Your Visibiity Score?Beacon

by Annette Rude, DTM

Lieutenant Governor Marketing

Is your club a beacon to prospective members - or is it invisible?  To find out, count 1 point for each condition below that describes your club.

0 - 4     Your club is invisible.

5 - 6     Your club is visible.

7 - 9     Your club shines.

10         Your club is a beacon.

Note:  View your club's online listing by clicking on the FIND button at www.toastmasters.org.

_____   We always hold regular meetings except for a scheduled holiday or inclement weather.

_____   We have only one meeting place.

_____   We have only one meeting time.

_____   Our time and place is listed accurately and clearly at Toastmasters International's online FIND a club page.

_____   I get a meaningful response or call back when I call the phone number on our club listing.

_____   I get a meaningful response when I send an email to the email address on our club listing.

_____   We have a club website with current contact information and directions and says that guests are welcome to visit.

_____   Our website is linked to our club listing and works when I click on it.  I get a call back or email when I use the contact information on our club website.

_____   We have a distinctive home page with a current picture of our club.

_____   Our club meeting information is listed regularly in a newspaper calendar and states that guests are welcome.

Before new members can join your club, they have to find your meeting.  If you cancel meetings or rotate locations or times, a visitor may not finding your meeting.  Chances are good, they won't try a second time, especially if they can't reach you by phone or email.

Is the online address for your club informative?  Consider adding instructions to your street address, like "rear entrance."

Guests don't know that a Toastmasters club is run by volunteers or that visitors are welcome without an appointment.  When they call the phone number listed for your club and get a business recording or "This is the Smith residence," they are reluctant to leave a mesage.  Consider adding "Toastmasters" to your voice mail message.

Your club has so much to offer.  With a few simple changes, you can transform your club from invisible to visible.  With some vision and a little energy, your club can become a beacon to prospective members.

I'm the VP of PR for the Builders Speaking Club #3785.   I would like to share with the local area, what Toastmasters has done for me.

Earlier this year, I became a personal trainer.   It's helped me to be more professional and polish my speaking skills.  Here is an article that was published about me and my success.

I want other club members to understand how Toastmasters can help them in other areas of their lives!

Thank You,
