May 2008 Edition
Jazz It Up!
Region V Conference - June 20-21, 2008

Jazz Band

By Jeanette Allen, ACB CL
Region V Planning Team

Jumpin' Jitterbugs! It's almost time for Jazz It Up! - the Region V conference hosted by District 22! Mingle with Toastmasters from eight districts Friday and Saturday, June 20-21 at the Kansas City Airport Marriott. Expand your horizons; tickle your funny bone; and get reinvigorated!

Education

The conference kicks off with a bang Friday afternoon at 1 P.M.  It's not everyday that we get to hear a World Champion of Public Speaking, so be there to hear Jim Key, who will enlighten us with his presentation "The Excellence Principle". To whet your appetite, a sampling of other educational enlightenment throughout the conference will include presentations on developing and keeping new clubs; running effective contests, and pumping up your audience with participation.

Fun

Woven throughout the conference will be side-splitting humor. On Friday night, sample the humor and BBQ tips from the BBQ Queens and revel in the Humorous Showcase where you'll hear some of the funniest speakers across Region V. On Saturday, add to your humor toolbox with tips from Mark Mayfield as he presents "Comic Secrets."  For other unique fun, see if you can out-bid others for fabulous items in the Silent Auction.

Inspiration

Saturday morning's opening ceremony will kick off with the Elder Statesmen, a Kansas City Jazz band. Learn how jazz has shaped much of American history and culture from Glenn North, the keynote speaker, who is the Poet-in-Residence at the American Jazz Museum.  You'll be inspired hearing about the accomplished Carol Marinovich, as she is presented with the 2008 Communication & Leadership Award.  Show your support for District 22's own Devon Jackson as he competes in the International Speech Contest against amazing contestants from seven other districts. The winner of this contest will advance to the International Convention later this summer to compete for the title of World Champion of Public Speaking.

Registration

For more information including the schedule and registration form, go to http://www.region5tm.org  Unlike the District conferences, there is no club registration available for the Region V Conference. Clubs should consider paying the registration for their club presidents.

The Adventures of a Club Coach

Phoenix RisingBy Jeanette Allen, ACB, CL

What a difference a year makes! A year ago, Emerald City Toastmasters club nearly folded due to losing the sponsoring company's support. As fate would have it, Unum in Leawood, Kansas, was trying to start a new club but was struggling to get 20 members in order to charter.

The two groups joined forces to form a newly invigorated version of the Emerald City club and started out the year with 9 enthusiastic members. With the low membership numbers and the fact that so many of the members were brand new, the group needed a club coach. I agreed to become the club coach since I had already been working with the group as Division Governor the previous year.

As club coach, I became a member of the club and have served in various meeting roles to help demonstrate how each role is performed.  I have provided information and suggestions along the way and generally acted as a resource person for the club.  have attended executive committee meetings to provide support to club officers as they discuss the club's status as well as changes to make the club better. It has been a challenging and fun year for me as a club coach and I have enjoyed every minute of it!

I have provided assistance, but it is the club members who have done the work. Emerald City Toastmasters Club has almost doubled their membership and continues to grow. Club members have learned standard Toastmasters' meeting protocol. Members are giving manual speeches and providing effective evaluations. Challenging Table Topics are presented at each club meeting.

The club is on track to make Distinguished this year and is aspiring to become President's Distinguished during 2008-2009. Emerald City Toastmasters is the "Phoenix rising from the ashes!"

Let Each Year Stand On It's Own
By Cyndra Melville, DTM

Club Officers; please be sure to report all of this year's achievements by June 30.  I know that it may be tempting to "save" a new member or an Educational Award until next year, but then we don't have a true picture of the accomplishments this year.  It may seem good for the club but it may cost your Area Governor, Division Governor or the District.  Each year should stand on it's own.

Upcoming Dates

June 7 TLI in Wichita, Kansas
June 14 Area/Division Governor Training
June 20-21 Region V Conference:  www.region5tm.org
