Cyndra MelvilleWith Challenge Comes Opportunity
By Cyndra Melville, DTM
District 22 Governor

I have heard it said that Challenge is like a coin.  Challenge is one side.  Opportunity is the other.  They come together.

Today's economic situation with businesses closing and downsizing is the challenge.  Opportunities arise when we let go of the status quo.  While some companies are suffering, others are flourishing.  The same goes for people.

Now is the time to hone your skills and beef up your résumé.  Position yourself to take advantage of an open opportunity.  Toastmasters is a wonderful ally.  Communication skills are needed in almost all positions.  The better your skills are, the better your opportunities are.

Remember Rob Christeson's article in our August newsletter? He challenged all Toastmasters leaders to earn at least one educational or leadership award this year?  (Check out the link to refresh your memory: 8-08 Newletter).  It is even more important now.  Become the better speaker and more effective leader that you want to be.  Those awards look good to a prospective employer as well, even if you want to move up in the company that you are currently working for.

December is a traditional time to revisit goals and set new ones.  Set yours so that you can accept the challenge and take advantage of coming opportunities.

TLI: Re-Charge, Re-Focus, Re-Commit
By Annette Rude, DTM
Lt. Governor Education and Training

This busy time of year, please pause and remember why you love your Toastmasters club.  Here are some of my reasons:

ˇ         They accept me as I am.

ˇ         They help me become the person I endeavor to be.

ˇ         An atmosphere where every member aspires to achievement.

ˇ         Magical moments of synergy, serendipity, collaboration and camaraderie.

With your reasons in mind, mark your calendar for January to re-charge your enthusiasm, re-visit your goals and re-commit yourself to leading your club to be the best that it can be.

Let us help you.  Mark your calendar to attend one of the District 22 Toastmasters Leadership Institute events listed below.  In fact, plan to attend more than one, to experience different presenters, different energy, different course offerings.

Discuss TLI in your club business meeting and make plans to attend as a group.  Plant some seeds for your club's future success by inviting a new Toastmaster to join you at this training event.

Here are some benefits to be gained by attending:

ˇ         Get acquainted and re-acquainted. Share your achievements and enthusiasm with old friends and some new Toastmaster friends. Meet your Area and Division Governors, your District leadership team, other club officers.

ˇ         Free goodies. As part of our MORE SPEECHES campaign, each club that attends will get 3 TI ribbons to be awarded in club meetings to recognize members who complete CC & AC programs.

ˇ         Recognition.  DCP Credit.  Goal Getter Ribbons.  TALKRS Tour sticker.   Enthusiasm Mugs (in Wichita).   AND, as promised, clubs that bring all 7 officers to a single TLI event will have stage time to brag about their club.

ˇ         General Session.  Presentations of common leadership topics, including the Distinguished Success Plan, a group discussion of success factors and issues in common.

ˇ         Club team session.  Attend as a club and take advantage of this time to collaborate and assess goals, re-group and re-commit to strategies and to your Distinguished Success Plan action.

ˇ         Seven Club Officer training breakout sessions.  Bring a problem you would like to solve and look for some solutions.  Re-charge your plans by hearing about what other clubs are doing.  Of course, you get credit toward your clubs Distinguished Club Plan goals.

ˇ         Extra sessions:  Judges & Chief Judge training, Contest Master training,  How to Run a Sound System, TM101.  TM101 will be an overview of the Toastmasters educational track including the Successful Club, Better Speaker and Leadership Excellence series and the Leadership Excellence programs, plus a little history and the Toastmasters calendar.

ˇ         Lunch & Learn events.  Inspirational speakers and panel discussions.  For training events that include a lunch break, sandwich orders will be taken during registration for delivery at lunch time.  Please note that other refreshments will not be served.  You are welcome to bring a beverage or snack.  We will provide local water.

ˇ         Book store.  Toastmasters educational manuals will be offered for sale with no shipping cost!

Registration is $3 per person at the door or $15 club pre-registration for unlimited attendance by all club members.  To pre-register your club, mail check or money order for $15 made out to Toastmasters District 22to: Annette Rude, D22 LGET, 4421 Springfield, Kansas City, KS 66103.  No credit cards please.

Please note that we will provide local water, but that other refreshments will not be served.  You are welcome to bring a beverage or snack of your choice.

Kim Myers Membership Success
by Kim Myers, DTM
Lt. Governor Marketing

Our first renewal period has passed.  How many clubs renewed at least 75% your members?  It appears that number is very low.  Those members that did not renew are no longer appearing on your membership rosters.  Please take the time to contact those who have not yet renewed.  If each member of the club contacts one non-renewing member, those members may decide to renew or come back to the meetings.  Sometimes the member's lives get busy and they lose sight of the reason they joined Toastmasters in the first place.

When a member does not come to a meeting twice in a row and has not contacted the Toastmaster of their absence, the club's Membership Committee should begin to make personal contact via a phone call.  Let that member know that you miss them, that they are valued members of your club.  Sometimes it is the simple recognition of their personal value to the club that draws them back.

In addition, please verify who the contact person for your club is on the Toastmaster's International website.  As the contact person for one of my community clubs, I average about two contacts a month of people interested in attending my club.  Recently that number has increased because they understand that communication skills are very valued in the employment marketplace.
