What's That Sound?
by Cyndra Melville, DTM
District 22 Governor
What's that sound? It's opportunity knocking!
Your first club meeting in May should be your Club Election Day. Toastmasters is one of the few places where you can take on a responsible position by just being willing to do the work. You don't need any experience. What you don't know how to do, we will help you with. Club officer training is included in our Toastmaster Leadership Institutes (TLIs) and you get a manual from Toastmasters International for every position. A successful term as a club officer will sure look good on your résumé! Don't wait to be asked. Volunteer. Check out what each officer does at this link: Club Officer Roles. Keep in mind if you are looking at being an Area Governor in District Leadership in the future, serving as Club President or VP Education is a requirement. Remember: A quorum (51 percent of active members) is needed to conduct business (including electing officers). Proxies or absentee ballots are not allowed at the club level. Members must be active and present to vote. Don't forget to fill out a club and officer information form online at the Club Business section immediately following your election so the correct officers will receive every important mailing. Or your club may submit the club and officer information form by mail or fax, instead.

Not Your Granddaddy's Toastmasters Leadership Institute
by Kim Myers, DTM
Lt. Governor Marketing
Many Toastmasters fail to attend the Toastmasters Leadership Institute when they are club officers because they feel that the training does not vary much. This year, District 22 will be presenting a new format for our Leadership Institute with the focus on leadership. Each incoming club officer should be attending one of the following sessions. In order to earn your distinguished club points, each club must send a minimum of 4 officers to our June and January sessions. Just because an officer has attended before does not mean that they should not come back again, and again, and again. It is part of your officer's promise to your club. Do not let your members down. Each members of the executive board should try to attend as a group - you will receive more from your training if you do!
Don't forget to encourage all of your members to attend the Toastmasters Leadership Institute. There will be sessions on Conducting a Speech Contest, Effective Evaluations, judges training, managing your club's website. Every member who wants to compete in a contest should attend this valuable training.
Dates: Wichita - Saturday June 6 Springfield - Saturday June 13 Kansas City - Saturday June 20 Kansas City - Monday June 29 Topeka - Saturday July 11 Complete information will be available at the District 22 website - www.toastmasters22.org. If you are interested in conducting an officer's session, or helping to support one or more of the institutes, please contact Kim Myers at kim.myersd22@yahoo.com. We would love to see you there! |

District Status Report
Your Success Contributes District Wide
by Annette Rude, DTM Lt. Governor Education & Training Incoming 2009-2010 District Governor
Have you and your club reviewed your Distinguished Club Plan recently? How are you doing? Distinguished goals are SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound. Our time target is June 30. The District can be Distinguished, too, but our success rests on your personal achievement and your club's achievement. Per Club We have translated our District-wide goals into per club achievements:
- 2.5 Competent Communicators per club
- 1 Advanced Communicator per club
- 1 Competent or Advanced Leader per club
- 8 New Members - Yes, we need all 8 and then some to make our goals.
Below shows our goals graphically. The white bars are for you to color in where your club is at this moment.
Be More than More Be a More than More club! Submit achievements beyond the maximum goals needed on your DCP. It helps your Area Governor and our District to meet their goals. We will recognize the More than More clubs at our Hall of Fame at our conference next fall. Your success is our success. Join us in our Toastmasters celebration by submitting your educational achievement by June 30.

Distinguished Clubs!
by Kim Myers, DTM Lt. Governor Marketing On April 18 at our District 22 Spring Conference the members of District 22 had the honor and privilege of spending time with Toastmasters International President, Jana Barnhill, Distinguished Toastmaster and Accredited Speaker. What did we discuss? The success of our members, our clubs, and our district. Can you guess which is most important? The answer is our members. Our challenge to you is to be the best that you can be in Toastmasters. Be the best you can be in the best clubs in the district. How do you do that, by working on your educational and leadership goals. How does your club accomplish helping you to be the best? By having dynamic, interesting, and fun meetings.
Being a member of a low member club, Northern Nights, I have found that I am often challenged to attend meetings because our core members fill in the major roles. As a club we decided that in order for our club to achieve our past success, we would find club coaches who would help renew our energy. So far, so good. We may not make distinguished this year, but we know that as each member of our club is working on the same goal - DISTINGUISHED - that we will invigorate our spirits.
The pride of our district is club 3990, Boeing Achievers, who have achieved the honor of being the first club in District 22 to become Presidents Distinguished.
The following clubs are Select Distinguished: 4989 Wichita Downtowners 1009 Suburban Club 1928 Early Bird Toastmasters Club 3785 Building Speakers Club 625236 Don't Stop Talking at DST 518 AgMasters 5664 Que Masters Club 1079230 Speaking Eagles 7703 Marathon Masters The following clubs are already Distinguished: 8616 Well Engineered Speakers 953433 I'MA Toastmaster The following clubs would be Distinguished if they had 20 members or a net increase of 5 members:

Challenge Your Club, Yourself, and Your Members (Beat the Clock)
by Kim Myers, DTM Lt. Governor Marketing
Toastmasters International has three membership contests for clubs each year. The Smedley Award named after our founder Ralph Smedley is the first membership contest of the year. Clubs are recognized with a ribbon for their banner and a manual for their club library.
The following clubs gained 5 or more members between August 1 and September 30 of 2008 and earned SMEDLEY awards for 2008.
458 Farmers Insurance 7 members 518 Agmasters 5 members 1009 Suburban 5 members 4989 Wichita Downtown 5 members 793002 Cerner PowerSpeakIT 5 members 1234533 EYKC 21 members The Beat the Clock membership drive is almost upon us. This membership drive runs from May 1 through June 30. Again, clubs can earn a ribbon for their banner and a manual for their club. Most importantly, this is the last chance to build your club memberships up in order to be a Distinguished Club. Many clubs in our district earn enough points to be Distinguished or better, but miss earning their Distinguished Club status because they do not have 20 members. Our Distinguished Clubs will be recognized at our Fall Conference in Topeka on November 20 and 21. Challenge your club, yourself and your members to be distinguished. |
