Social networking tools such as FaceBook, LinkedIn, and Twiter can be valuable resources to both keep in touch with current member and attract potential members of our Toastmasters Clubs.  They require very little set-up and overhead, but the payout can be huge!

Twitter is the most immediate of the three.  You can “tweet” status updates about your club speech contest that starts in an hour and post pictures as a follow-up.  Tweeting about meetings and events as they occur create an urgency and may potentially increase your attendance.  Plus, using #hashtags (unique words with the # sign in front) make your tweets easier to find. Twitter allows both members and non-members to follow you.  Be sure to keep them entertained!

Facebook shares the same immediacy as Twitter.  The advantage with Facebook is you can include lengthy details rather than short phrases.  You can upload pictures and videos.  Creating a fan page for your club, area, division or district is a good idea because an unlimited number of people can be a fan.  Individual Facebook pages allow a maximum of 5,000 friends.  Facebook allows you to privately message all of your members at one time.  Members can set these messages to go straight to the smart phone.  It’s important to remember the phrase “don’t overstay your welcome” on Facebook.  You don’t want to post so often your fans browse past your updates.

LinkedIn is a wonderful tool to use if you are looking for a place to share ideas and have discussions regarding specific topics.  Many use it as a place to look for professional and career driven opportunities.  People can find information about you and the organizations you are a member of.  It’s professional social networking at its best.

I strongly encourage each club to have Facebook or Twitter and use it to your advantage for promoting your club, keeping your members informed and attracting new members.  Your potential new member base is only as broad as you make it, so why not take it to the web?!
