District Leadership Opportunities
By John Mulroy, ACG ALB
Lt. Governor Education & Training
"I joined Toastmasters to improve my Public Speaking skills." That is the answer most Toastmasters give when asked why they decided to join our organization. A number also realize that they can improve their Leadership skills by taking active roles in their club meetings and perhaps even serving as a Club Officer.
Is that all that we offer? There is just one answer - absolutely not. If you are really interested in taking your public speaking and leadership skills to the next level, consider serving as a District Officer. There are elected positions and appointed positions. There are committee positions and 37 positions that earn credit for the Advanced Leader Silver award.
Do you wonder what a District Officer does? You have met your Area Governor at the TLI's and conferences. You have met your Division Governor and seen the District Governor and Lieutenant Governors in action. They are real people just like you.
Are you qualified to run for elected office? Serving on the District Council as a club president or vice president education is prerequisite for the elected positions. A passion for Toastmasters, a can-do attitude, the support of your family, participation in District events and attendance at Governor Training on May 22, 2010 are also needed.
The election itself will be on May 1 during the District Council meeting at the Spring Conference.
You can find more specific information online. At General District Election Information find the following:
Officer Qualifications -- a summary document
Area governor -- 25 positions
Division governor -- 6 positions
Lt. governor marketing -- 1 position
Lt. governor education & training -- 1 position
District governor -- 1 position

The following committee positions are appointed. They are fun and a chance to exercise new skills, from mentoring and recruiting to writing and planning. Which one would you like to do?

March Renewals
By Rob Christeson, DTM
Lt. Governor Marketing
You know it is true - we are at a critical time in our economy where every extra skill and experience can help us be not only more successful, but frankly help us to stay employed. It is times like now, when we will be asking our members to submit their semi-annual renewals, that you can make the biggest difference in your own communication, leadership, and networking skills.
You probably know the requirement is to have semi-annual renewals submitted to Toastmasters International by 1 April, 2010. If you are a club treasurer, you know this from your training and your When you are the Treasurer manual. It is time to start that process at your club meetings this week. Once you start collecting, you can submit any time after March 1st.
Why finish in March instead of "waiting"?
-
It can be done! This is the best (personal/professional) reason.
-
You can report to your club's executive council the completion of the dues submission.
-
You save yourself the additional e-mails and calls from your Area Governor to follow-up.
-
Most importantly - You support your members in their continued success.
Do you have members that are on the fence, or just running late with their checks? If so, here is where a little extra effort can pay off big for you and your club. The Treasurer, VP of Membership, and President should all work to support this effort.
First - make direct human contact. E-mail is a good primer, but phone them today to remind them to bring their checkbook.
Second - for those on the fence: Remind them of the advantages of membership. Just like our International President Gary Schmidt says: Confidence. Leadership. Service.
Third - don't neglect the personal touch - "We want you to stay". It's important for this to not only sound sincere, but to be sincere.
Finally, it is important that we care about our fellow members, and that we show it. You are going to have members whose schedules do not work with your club meetings any more, or have been laid-off from your company. Take an extra minute to suggest some community clubs in the area, especially for those laid-off members. Networking is one of the most powerful tools they can have at this time (trust me, I was there myself last February). Look at the FIND a club function on TI's website, and do a search by zip code. Do this not only to show that you care, but because you do care.
Help your fellow club members to see the advantage of continued membership in Toastmasters, keep your club strong, and Unleash Your Possibilities!

Promoting Your Club -- On The Web
By Marilyn Schwartz, ACG, ALB
Public Relations Officer
It is a given fact that most guests (a.k.a. potential new members) come to a community/open club meeting because they have found your club location, day and time on the Internet. Whether they visit the Toastmasters International or your club's website to obtain this information, it needs to be correct. When your meeting location, day and/or time changes and contact email/phone number, be sure to change the information on both websites.
To change club information on Toastmasters International website, go to the Club Business section (http://www.toastmasters.org/ >Members>Club Officer tab>login by entering Club Number & Password>choose "Change my club's meeting and/or club officer information".
It is just as important for corporate/closed clubs to keep their information updated. In larger corporations, meeting rooms, even buildings, may change. In these cases, the club website is usually on a company intranet. Be sure that even temporary, one time changes are noted in advance on your club website.
Every club should check their club information both on Toastmasters International and their club website at least twice a year. Make it part of your yearly routine when you turn your new officers' list in online before the July 1st start of the new T.I. year to check and update your club information. January is a great time to do a second yearly check so the club information is correct for Open Houses and other membership campaigns.
First impressions are lasting impressions. Nothing is more frustrating for a guest than to show up to an empty room when they make the effort to check out a Toastmasters club. Ensure that this will never happen at your club by keeping your club information in sync and current on both the Toastmasters International and your club websites. |
Set Your Alarm Clock for Distinguished!
District Governor
I want your club to be Distinguished. I think you do, too. Whether it seems possible or impossible, why not try anyway?
If you really want to be somewhere by a certain time, you take steps to make it happen. You determine the travel time and you set your alarm - maybe 2 alarms. You give yourself a directive to get up when the alarm goes off.
Have you set your club's alarm clock for success? Here's are some steps you can take to achieve Distinguished on time:
-
Educate your club. Present the Successful Club Module, How to be a Distinguished Club.
-
Survey every club member to determine their expectation for completing the education modules that they are working on. Prepare a three year plan showing everyone's dates for completion.
-
Prepare a Distinguished Club Plan that includes goals to be completed this year.
-
Develop strategies for excellent club meetings. Devote a club meeting to holding a Moments of Truth workshop in order to engage every member in the process of making your club excellent.
-
Set a date and develop a strategy for achieving each and every Distinguished goal. Aim and you might hit your target.
We plan to celebrate your success on May 1 at our Spring Conference - then again on June 30 as the year ends - and finally at the Hall of Fame next fall.
I want you to be there, sharing in the joy of success.
Don't oversleep! Set your club's alarm clock for May 1.

Club Realignment
By Rob Christeson, DTM
Lt Governor Marketing
Each year our district performs a process called realignment to balance our areas and divisions. As Lt. Governor Marketing, I am charged with keeping the areas balanced within each division in terms of club numbers and balance the workload for new Area Governors. This year's changes represent a new area due to growth in Division A, and the loss of an area in Division R.
Realignment is always a challenge, but one that is necessary as we grow as a district. The realignment changes must be approved at the business meeting at the Spring Conference. Each club president and VP-Education should know where their club will live in the district next year.
You will only see the changes shown here. If your club is not listed, there is no change! The first Area is the current area - the second is the new area.

Toastmaster Leadership Institute News
By John Mulroy, ACG ALB
Lt. Governor Education and Training
Four down and a few to go! WHEW!!!!! This has been a very busy start of the new calendar year. So far, 323 Club Officers have been to one of the Toastmasters Leadership Institute sessions we have held. There is one more regular session to go - Saturday February 13th in Topeka.
Ater that, there will be make-up sessions offered at a couple of different locations. One of the comments we hear often from officers is "I went to that last summer - I don't need to go again". That may or may not have been true in the past, however this year we are trying something different. Instead of the standard canned presentations, we are asking the presenters of the officer sessions to facilitate open discussions amongst the attendee's. So far, this has proven very valuable to the officers - it helps them get answers to some of their questions and also allows them to share their experiences. Every comment we have received has been positive and supportive of the change.
Make-Up Club Officer Training
Please plan on attending the make-up sessions that scheduled by Division Governors in your area.
Division A Governor, Rhonda Green, has scheduled make-up officer training on February 20th in Wichita at LSI Corporation, located at 3718 Rock Road. Registration will begin at 8:30 AM, and the training will last until Noon. If your club has not paid the Club rate, then there will be a $3.00 fee to attend.
The Division L and Division R Governors, Susan Swanson and David Whitner respectively, will be holding make-up training on February 20th in the Kansas City metro area. Theirs will be held at the KCMO Water District Offices on 63rd Street. For more information, contact them at either Susan_Swanson@kcmo.org or davidf.whitner@netzero.net.

Spring Conference
Confidence. Leadership. Service.
By John Mulroy, ACG ALB
Lt. Governor Education & Training
Three words. They do not seem like very complicated words, do they?
Those three words are the theme of Toastmasters International as an organization this year and will be the overall theme for our Spring Conference being held at the Airport Hilton Hotel on April 30th and May 1st. Our keynote speakers, Jack Mackey, Diana Kovac, and Al Voorhees will address one of those as their topic tie in to our District Theme - Unleash Your Possibilities!
There will be three educational breakouts each offering a choice between two different sessions. These sessions will vary from speaking style to speech evaluations, from dressing for success for your speech to values and service in leadership. You might even be able to attend a session and learn how to put together a good speech.
Friday Fun Night will be back - this time with a club based theme called "Club Feud" - similar to the classic TV show Family Feud. It will be hosted by Don't Stop Talking at DST.
There will be an Achievers Breakfast on Saturday morning hosted by Lois Harger and Marianne Lee.
Two discounts will be offered - an Early Bird discount and an Achievers Discount.
The Early Bird discount is a 10% reduction of the full registration fee if registered by April 1st.
The Achiever's discount is a 10% discount (one per person) to anyone who earns an Educational Award between July 1, 2009 and April 1, 2010 and signs up for full registration.
Two things will be missing - the club registration fee and the late fee. The full registration fee will be $125.
Hotel guest rooms are avialble to Toastmasters at a discounted rate of $92.00 per night.
The registration form is on the Conference page of our website: www.toastmasters22.org. Watch the District 22 website for complete information very soon.

Why I Chose Toastmasters
By Mike Burkemper, Temple Toastmasters
(Reprinted from The Temple Toast, club newsletter for
Temple Toastmasters)
Communication is not an option. It is something that you do all the time, every day. Once you acknowledge this, it's easy to see why you should become the best communicator you can.
We all have instances in which using excellent speaking skills can help us in life. I am a salesperson, and persuasive speaking is of huge advantage to me. There is a lot of competition in car sales. I need to be able to effectively communicate to my customer why they should buy my product instead of someone else's.
I remember selling cars before I joined Toastmasters. I would sometimes stumble over words and not think much of it. My presentation was flat. I was just like every other sales person out there. I probably didn't jump out and grab the customers' attention. Since I joined Toastmasters, I have noticed a definite advantage.
Toastmasters has taught me to prepare and rehearse my presentations ahead of time. It's taught me to research my ideas, connect with people, be the authority on the topic, and have more self-confidence. Now my presentations are alive and entertaining, informative and well-rehearsed. Customers are not distracted by my faults in speaking. They focus on my message, which is why they should buy my car.
We all have different reasons for joining Toastmasters. Think for a few moments why you joined. Think of how you can get closer to that goal with the Toastmaster program. Do you need to give more speeches? Do you need to go for that Competent Leadership award? Ask a more seasoned member to help you. You can do it!
