Keeping the Promise!
By John Mulroy, DTM
District Governor
In case you have not heard yet, the District 22 theme for the 2010-2011 Toastmasters year is "Keeping the Promise".
That theme could cause you to have questions or thoughts like: What promise are you talking about? How does that apply to me? I could care less - all I am interested in is my next speech.
Did you know that each of us agreed to a big promise when we joined our first Toastmasters club? The promise itself is on the reverse side of every membership application, and it is printed within the first few pages of both the Competent Communicator and the Competent Leader manuals. There are ten points to the Promise - some of them are about your doing things that will improve your experience as a Toastmaster, and some on how your efforts can help your club be successful.
The Gavel will be starting a monthly series of articles in the August issue, each about a different point of the Promise. I believe that if we all make our best effort to keep each point of the Promise, we will all attain whatever goals we have set for ourselves this year and every club will grow much stronger.
A few other things we will be doing this year are: continuing the District Classified Ads (there may be unique uses for these in the near future), we will be focusing on each club reaching Distinguished status by May 1st, 2011, we will be promoting the Founders ribbon program, and each Division Governor will have two opportunities to contribute an article through the course of the year.
So for the next year I know I will be "Keeping the Promise" - let's do that together! |
Enhance your Performance!
By Rob Christeson, DTM
Lt. Governor Education and Training
June was a busy month! Over 400 Toastmasters completed Toastmasters Leadership Institute and Club Officer Training in Wichita, Topeka, Overland Park, Springfield and Liberty. The collective efforts by our dedicated team of trainers from throughout the District made this TLI season one of our most successful. Special Thanks!!! to TLI Coordinators Paula Kennedy, Tawny Shell-Navarro, Ken McClendon and Dawna Cape. Everyone involved with each event, from working registration to presenting sessions deserves a "Thank You!" from all of us for their time and dedication to their fellow Toastmasters.
With so many changes in the past few years, and more this year, now is the time to be up on the latest info from TI and the District. TI has implemented new system changes, including how we access club business, add new members and input awards. If you haven't read about this, look at:
If you were unable to attend any of the sessions, you missed some great information. Please plan on attending the make-up sessions that will be scheduled by your Division Governor. Make-up trainings will be scheduled and updated on the district calendar at:

Membership: What's in it for you!
By Rhonda F. Green, DTM
Lt. Gov. Marketing
Why did you join Toastmasters? The answer to this question is usually "I joined because of my fear of speaking in public". Toastmasters has an excellent educational program that will help deal with this type of fear. One of the most important aspects of the program is the mutually supportive feedback that we receive during the evaluation portion of our meeting. In order for this to work, we have to have members. The program cannot succeed without members to facilitate the meeting by taking the roles of Toastmaster, Grammarian/Ah Counter and Evaluator among others. When you bring a new member into your club, you bring a different viewpoint. When the new member gives you an effective evaluation, he/she provides critical feedback. This feedback is crucial to the improvement of your communication and leadership skills. Members are truly the backbone of the program. Why should you find new members for your club? How will you benefit? 1. New members provide new feedback to help you improve your skills. 2. You increase your leadership skills by evaluating and mentoring others. 3. You need members to conduct a meeting and to lead as officers of the club. 4. Members provide the opportunity to practice and improve team building skills. 5. The club becomes stronger by having a membership to support the facilitator roles at the meeting. 6. You increase your personal network of friends and business associates. It's not the responsibility of the Vice President of Membership alone to build the membership of the club. Each member shares the task of keeping a strong membership base. Invite people you know in the community and at work to join your club. Your fellow Toastmasters play an important part in helping you to become a better communicator and leader and advance your goal of enhancing your personal performance. |
Achievements in 2009-2010
District Governor 2009-2010 District 22 is proud to report many successes in Kansas and western Missouri for the year ending June 30, 2010. Watch for our year end Gavel edition where we will acknowledge the achievers. Mark your calendar to attend the Hall of Fame at the Fall Conference on November 13 in Overland Park, where we will celebrate the achievements. Congratulations to all Toastmasters who unleashed their possibilities through completing an educational program. In 2009-2010, Toastmasters in District 22 completed the following: 232 Competent Communication awards, 94 Advanced Communication awards, 135 Leadership awards, 9 Distinguished Toastmasters Congratulations to the Club and District leaders who unleashed their possibilities this year by leading their teams to Distinguished success: 44 Distinguished Clubs 17 Distinguished Areas 4 Distinguished Divisions We have SEVEN new Toastmasters clubs. Thank you, to the many, many volunteers, sponsors, mentors and leaders who made that possible. District 22 finishes the 2009-2010 year with 104 paid clubs and just over 2000 members, including over 700 new members. Thank you, to club coaches whose dedication rekindled that Toastmasters spark where it was needed. Toward our District wide goals, District 22 achieved 42 points. While we missed our membership goals, our educational achievements were above average. Out of 81 Toastmasters Districts, District 22 ranks 7th in Competent Communication awards, 18th in Advanced Communication awards and 29th in Leadership achievements. Our accomplishments go beyond what we can measure in points. Each achievement is a memory to cherish - and a building block for the future. Thank you for reaching for the possibilities and being a part of our 2009-2010 District 22 Toastmasters team. |

A Timely Contest for Members!
Lt. Gov. Marketing
Does anybody know what time it is? If you bring in 3 new members to the same club before December 1st, you could answer that question by looking at your brand new Toastmasters Sculpted Frame Clock.
If you qualify to get the clock, there are two things you will have to do to receive it. First, you will have to send the contest form to me either by e-mail (Rhonda.Green@spiritaero.com) or fax (316-526-8627) no later than December 2nd. Second, you will have to attend one of the Winter TLI (Toastmaster Leadership Institute) sessions.
Keep in mind that any of these new members who join in August and September will also count towards the Smedley award. During August and September, all clubs will be participating in the annual Toastmasters International Smedley Membership Campaign. If any club has 5 new members join in those months, they will receive a Club Banner Ribbon and a special discount code for 10% discount on a club Toastmasters International Store order.
The real answer to that opening question is - it's time to actively practice Keeping the Promise by bringing in new members to our clubs! |
The Best Buy in Town By Martha J De Mond, DTM Trying too hard to sell Toastmasters to visitors attending your club meetings instead of encouraging them to buy into your club? Visitors come to see what Toastmasters is about and are willing to buy into what they see as a benefit to them. The message I am giving to the Division S Area Governors for their clubs is when a club is inviting, prepared, and enthusiastic, visitors want to join. Here are some tips to help "Close the Sale", turning visitors into members: - Start and end meetings on time:
- Hit the gavel on time. Guests will see this is a club for them when all members are ready to start on time.
- Have a theme:
- Themes make meetings more interesting, especially when the Word-of-the-Day and Table Topics are related to the theme.
- Speeches and Evaluations:
- When everyone does their best to give a well prepared speech or a significant evaluation, this may be a turning point for a guest to become a member.
- Constructive feedback shows how we ultimately build our communication skills.
Following these suggestions with sincere enthusiasm could be the clincher that convinces your guest that your club is the one they want to join. Enthusiasm does rub off, so if your guest gets excited and enjoys himself at your meeting, you have one more thing to do before they leave. Tell them you would enjoy having them as a member, and ask them to join. Just the act of asking them tells the guest you really do want them to become a member. Good luck to all the Area Governors as you work with your clubs. Keeping The Promise can make this happen! |

Downtown Toastmasters
Happy 60th!

Submitted by Neil Swanson-Chrisman, ACS ALB
Downtown Toastmasters Club #99 celebrated its 60th anniversary with a picnic at Antioch Park in Merriam KS. Toastmasters in the area were invited to join the festivities including a picnic lunch, fun and lots of good conversation. Other events included a Tall Tales Contest and a Future Speakers of the World Open Mic Event.
Downtown is one of the oldest clubs in the district, and still going strong. Beautiful weather brought a great turnout with over 30 people in attendance including both current and former members, family, friends, and special guests from across District 22. District Governor John Mulroy, DTM, inducted the incoming officers of Downtown Toastmasters, and everyone enjoyed the amazing and unbelievable stories told in the Tall Tales Contest. Dan Oas, CC, CL, a member of Downtown, took home 1st place with his story about why dogs sniff each other's tails. The event concluded with toasts and remembrances of 60 fantastic years.
For the last three years, Downtown has worked with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Kansas City providing speech coaching for the contestants of the Youth of the Year Speech Contest, and running the Youth Leadership Program for members of the Boys and Girls Club. Downtown meets at the Ronald McDonald House at 2502 Cherry, Kansas City MO. They are an open club, and visitors are always welcome. |
