Distinguished Programs for Clubs
The main goal of Toastmasters is to allow its members to improve their presentation and
leadership skills. Like every goal, a way to measure it is needed. Milestones are a clear
indication that progress is being made. Everyone can point to the milestones and say "I
achieved that".
To give a consistent measuring stick for the milestones of the goals, Toastmasters Internationa
created the Distinguished Programs. There is a program for clubs, areas, divisions and districts.
All are designed to assure that members are progressing towards their goals and to allow
Toastmasters International to perform its designated functions.
Often, some Toastmasters members believe that a club and/or district is pushing too much
on being a distinguished club or a distinguished district. These members feel that the focus
is being shined on the club and district rather than the individual members. To a degree, that can
become true. However, when done correctly, the distinguished programs show that, collectively,
a distinguished club and a distinguished district mean that the members are earning educational
and leadership awards. A strong club and a strong district can enhance the learning of the members.
