Being A Division Governor: What's in it for Me?
Be a Division Governor!
Have you:
- Served at least six consecutive months as either a Club President or Club VP Education?
- Served at least twelve consecutive months as an Area Governor or other district officer?
Are you good at managing leaders? Do you understand the DCP? Do you enjoy working with a diverse team?
If so, consider becoming a Division Governor to further develop your leadership skills.
What is a Division?
A Toastmasters district divides itself into divisions. For instance, District 22 has the following five divisions: T.A.L.K.S. The District Executive Committee divides each division into areas, usually from three to seven areas per division. Each area has several Toastmasters clubs (usually 4 - 7). Each division and each area has a governor.
The division's mission is to provided District contact, support, and service to its areas so that the clubs they serve may in turn fulfill their responsibilities to the club members.
What Does a Division Governor Do?
A Division Governor serves for a full Toastmasters Year (July 1 through June 30th) to guide and assist Area Governors within the Division. This assistance and guidance includes:
- Providing motivation, guidance, and supervision to Area Governors as they fulfill their roles and responsibilities
- Holding regular Division Council Meetings for Area Governors
- Coordinating Division Speech Contests
- Participating in training for club officers, Area and Division Governors
- Serving Division Clubs by providing district support and resources through the Area Governors
- Assisting district officers in helping to build new clubs within the Division
- Attending quarterly District Executive Committee Meetings
- Attending District Council Meetings at Fall and Spring Conferences

You may be asking yourself, "What's in it for me?" While no two of us are exactly alike, here are some ways that being a Division Governor may benefit you.
- Practice leadership skills with a group of people over whom you have no authority. This is a truer indicator of your leadership than in situations where you have position power
- Gain satisfaction from helping others meet their personal goals
- Get recognition from district officers as they show appreciation for your efforts
- Earn credit toward Toastmasters Advanced Leadership Silver award
- Become a better communicator as you interact with Toastmasters serving in a variety of positions and having a diversity of skills
